Possibly one of our favourite places to visit in Calella de Palafrugell are the captivating and absolutely stunning botanical gardens of Cap Roig which overlook the sea and offer a vast array of beautiful plants, cacti, trees (including a cedar of Lebanon) and the traditional Catalonian castle which sits in the middle of the gardens.
The gardens originate back to 1927 when the exiled colonel Nicolai Woevodsky and his parter Dorothy Webster purchased the land and created the gardens of Cap Roig. Upon Dorothy's death in 1980, the gardens were left to the La Caixa foundation who sought the assistance of The National Trust to establish an open garden for people to visit. There are over 1000 specimen plants over 17 hectares of garden clinging to the hillside.
Cap Roig is a popular attraction and also hosts Catalonia's largest annual music event - the Cap Roig Festival.
During our visit to Cap Roig, we were lucky enough to listen to musicians rehearsing as we explored the gardens which provided a fabulous atmosphere.
This blog post also contains a video Raff shot and edited of Cap Roig, which is linked above. Enjoy!
